Our main focus in Language Arts for March and April will be on story writing. We have explored the parts of a story and recently we worked on writing entertaining beginnings. The children know that it is important to begin by introducing the main character, the setting and to give a little information as to what might happen in the story - to create suspense so that the reader wants to continue reading the story. The middle should be the main event - actions and the steps involved in the character solving the problem or conclusion to the adventure. The children have been encouraged to add elaborative details using the 5 senses - what the characters see, feel, hear, smell or taste. This brings the story to life! The middle of a story should be the biggest part. There should be a mix of action, description, thoughts and feelings. The ending of a story concludes the main event. It should contain a decision, hope, memory, lesson or a feeling. We are writing and reading leprechaun stories. Look for them to come home soon!
Juicy Words - your child might have mentioned juicy words. In our class juicy words are words that are exciting and descriptive rather than boring. Our sentence writing activities have allowed the children to explore the use of juicy words and much progress has taken place. Home Reading - Just a reminder to log the minutes read so that your child can receive their Harvey the Hound bookmarks. Your child should read 10-15 minutes each evening. At this age and stage it is still important for you to listen to them read. If there is not enough time for them to read aloud, please ensure that they can retell you what they read and that they are comprehending what they are reading.
